About Charles Gruwell
A lifelong of design experience paired with passion
to create a sense of place for the LGBTQ+ community
With a career spanning over 45 years, Charles Gruwell has designed breathtaking spaces, but The Charles is his most personal project yet. His work has taken him across the globe, each destination leaving an imprint on his distinctive, cosmopolitan approach to design. From the grand hotels of Europe to the minimalist retreats of Asia, Charles has drawn inspiration from a world of influences, refining his signature style into something uniquely his own: a seamless blend of Coastal Contemporary, Classical European, Rustic Ranch Elegance, and Asian-inspired design.
Mentored by some of the most celebrated designers in the industry, Charles has been behind the interiors of luxury resorts, boutique hotels, and elite private residences. His CHARLESTYLE home furnishings collection is a reflection of this mastery—each piece carefully curated to bring his signature sophistication into everyday living.
But for all his accolades and career achievements, Charles has always dreamed of returning to his roots. In 2020 Charles returned to his hometown of Pacific Grove and focused his energy on his newest commission, the design of the new Stilwell Hotel in Carmel By The Sea…it was truly a labor of love which opened to rave reviews in May 2024. After working on the project for nearly 4 years… he set his sights on owning his own Hotel. He met his new partners Don & Jay Desai, while working together on the restoration of the famed Robles del Rio Lodge in Carmel Valley…. His design partnership evolved into the creation of The Charles Pacific Grove and is his newest and most personal project in his career, as he wants to reimagine how gay friendly hotels look and feel for the global traveler.
Now, Charles invites you to step into his vision. To be among the first to experience a space where style isn’t just decoration—it’s an experience.
